5/27/2009 – A*Thursday Baby

(Editted from a three week posting titled “Three Times is the Charm Edition”)

Hey…How ya’ doin’…What’s happenin’ Baby?

Okay, it has been three weeks since my last entry but believe me, All*Star Thursdays have been quite exciting in the interim.

May 27th we had a Mythical Misty Meadow Jam where we had the extraordinary experience of literally playing in a cloud.  It never quite rained, nor did it really stop.  Given that we don’t need no stinkin’ conditions, we just went at it.  Rob and Sue, Fearless Lou, Jaime-TJH, Ben Heaver, Roger, Fresh, Quinn-O, Mojito Man Jay, Mary-Mary, tedShred and the Lovely Chrissy were all out.

I started my day with a Heave featuring Ben and Jaime, followed by a bunch of smoking mix ‘n match Jams.  There was Joey, Fresh Roger, and TO in a flow filled extravaganza of disc wizardry with a bunch of co-ops.  Ted broke for water and jumped in with me, Quinn, and Fresh which morphed into an early everybody in the pool 7-man Jam.  That was fun, but there was too much sunlight for that to last and we went back to two 3-ways.  Somewhere in there TO and Joey team-up for a no drop co-op sequence that was just zany.

5/21/2009 – A*T Chronicles: May 20th

Bienvenidos,

So Mom sez to me “Pauly (Yes, that’s what she calls me, and no YOU don’t have permission to use that appellation) I need a ride to the airport.”  Okay Mom, when?  “Thursday at 5pm.”  GULP!!!!

Of course I did the right thing.  This is my Mom, the ‘Worrying Warrior’, and the most incredible person that I know.  I dropped her at about 4:40pm and drove into the city, encountering the normal amount of traffic, and lucking into a parking spot on 69th Street at about 5:10pm.  Sweet!

The weather was grand as I walked in from the NW corner and saw Rob (who bore The Gamboa on behalf of Mikey Reid) Jammin’ with someone unfamiliar…is that a woman?  Indeed it was!  Ann Zemitis made her All*Star Thursday debut last week, as did Chris Ryan, an amazing player of the crustilicious generation.  We also saw the return of Fearless Lou, and Nils from Hamburg Germany who found the manhole by following the homing instict bred into all Jammers.  The crew was rounded out by Richie Regs, Quinn-O, The Oracle, The Ageless Trevor Brown, TedShred and the Lovely Chrissy, Doug E. Fresh, Sue, and a rare appearence put in by Eddie Bennett.  There was also a nice contingent of Heavers including  Jaime TJH, Jim Heaver, Jestin Heaver, Ivan TJH,and Ralph Heaver.  Oh, and of course, we had Mojito Jay come by as well.

It was nice to meet Ann finally, and Chris came in as I was nailing up.  Very tempting, the the presence of my Heaving Brethren caused me to start my day in the finest of ways.  Jaime, Ralph, and I got it going at distance right quickly.  Ralph snapping off a many a sweet forehand while Jaime threw me a blind backhand strike at about 60 yards as well as some beautiful high arcing tosses that hooked in for strikes as well.

When I broke for a Marghie before entering the Jam Zone, I saw TO Jammin with Quinn-O and Fearless.  A fine combination indeed.  I believe it was during this Jam that Lou hit a Tea bag-to brush-to a lookaway Vacation!  Apparently the theatre did not impinge on his practive time.  Then there was Chris and Ann Z. doing their thing.  Very smooth and mostly casual. The Oracle jumped in with them to add some spice and get a taste of the new blood as well.  They did some very nice work and then when Ann chilled for a few, Chris and Joey did some very Hein Speed Flow, going droppless for about three minutes.

My next Jam was a 2-man with Fresh which was really good.  Fresh is a Jammer with a unique flow-filled style and an incredible ability to up the ante in any Jam, as evidenced by his being awarded The Gamboa more than than anyone else.  We got some great flow–egged on by the Mojito and Marghies, not doubt–and this was the best I have played with him in a very long time.  After a short break, we snatched up TedShred and the three of us went off.  Lots of Hein behavior in this one and it wound up morphing into the Dusk is approaching/Go For It/Beer Jam when Joey, Quinn, and my Boy Fearless joined in.  The funniest move of this Jam was when Fresh hiked up his shorts as high as a Grandpa in Florida and nailed a Drunken Gitis to the delight of the gang.  Of course, the rest of us followed suit by hiking our shorts and going for big seals.  It was a little rough on The Package, but I did manage to hit something valid.

All in all it was an excellent day.  When all was said and done, The Gamboa sub-committee (a group composed of 2 – 69 people) designated Ted/Shred as this week’s winner.  Week in, week out, TO is always amazing, but this was the first time he has had it since it’s inaugural awarding when PK bestowed upon the group in 2007.

Roger was absent due to the fact that he was hosting a gathering on behalf of Bradford T. and his organization.  While this was for a good cause, Brad was unanimously voted the Yella Jersey for scheduling his event on a Thursday.  What was he thinking?

Peace Out, Yo!

TP, TJH

P.S. June starts with Z on June 4th, G()d Willing and then the first A*TGJI invitee Dan Yarnell on June 11th!!!

5/14/2009 – A*T Chronicles: The Throw it to Mikey, He Takes Everything Edition

Heh-woooooh…Heh-woh!

The idea of Mikey Reid making to Jam with the Hard Corps of the Big Apple has been a pipedream ’round these parts for years.  The guy runs a farm by himself for Heaven’s sake–he can’t get away everyone said.  Well, don’t tell Mikey that something is impossible ‘cuz he’ll just do it to prove you wrong.

When I got to the Meadow, it was a little overcast having rained in the morning and there was nary a soul out there.  I just triangulated my way to the Manhole and got prepped.  Mojito Man Jay was the first one to come by and say hello.  I told him that we had a Guest Jammer comin’ in and he got psyched up for us.  Roger and Quinn-O rolled in next, followed by Sir Robert’s Consort Susan.  Once we got nailed up, the three of us got started doin’ that thang, while Susan fretted over the fate of Rob and Mikey who had left before her on bicycles.  Next to arrive was Bill Doobs, then Fresh, JB (who still ain’t got film in that camera), Tedley and the Lovely Chrissy, with Kevin making it out just after them, and last but not least came The Oracle bearing The Gamboa for the first time in 2009.

Mikey Reid finally arrived with Rob, walkin in from the East.  Rob said “I thought it was gonna be Bandshell” because of the morning drizzle.  We all knew better–he just wanted him some solo Mikey on the Hard Concrete.  The good thing was they we both warmed up and things got started in earnest.  There were many notable combinations of Jammers happening.  Roger Mikey and Fresh got going while I warmed up with TO, was joined by Kevin, and then Quinn-O.  We had some nice Flow, and then I went to grab a Margharita and get a good look at Mr. Reid in action.  DAAAAAYUM!

How about doing a foot roll up the leg, to an arm roll brush set , straight to Gitis?  Not enough?  Then there was Fresh’s Scarecrow Brush which Mikey sealed with a–say it with me–Gitis.  The grand finale of this Jam came with a UD O’Malley with Mikey in the middle doin’ a backroll brush pass which Roger sealed with a very Hein Gitis that was so forceful that the rim broke.  Too much fun.  Mr. Reid is totally ambi-disc-erous and has great energy to go with a boatload of moves, so he is a joy to play with.

Personally I got me some Quinn-O and Bill Doobs then I hopped in with Roger and Joey.  Roger bailed after a few minutes to join Quinn and Doobs, I think, while I stayed and got The Oracle properly warmed up. It as during the TO, Fresh, and Mikey Jam that our visiting man of the soil went nuts hitting a multiple tap combo and sealing it with a wild Flying Roots.  Kevin said “Man!  I’ve only seen that on Youtube!”  Really amazing stuff.

I think the Jam of the Day honors might have to go to the combination of Fresh Sir Tedley, The Oracle, Roger, and Mikey.  There was plenty of Flow, and each time someone nailed one for the highlight reel, the next guy would say “Oh Yeah?  Try THIS one on for size!”

Naturally the last Jammer standing was TedShred who nailed a double spinning Gitis to finish the night’s activities.  He was making his bid for a certain Fickle Finger of Frisbee Fate named after a departed Brother (Miss you Diego!).  But he too fell short.  For the first time, The Gamboa was given to a Guest Jammer–Mikey Reid.  His performance on this day was not to be denied.  BRAVISSIMO!!!!

A couple of notes.  Erwin Velasquez (a new Dad and a Granpa at the same time!!!) made it out on Friday, along with Ann Zemitis so we had an A*Friday as well, though I was on Daddy Duty for that one.  Monday, TedShred and I answered to bell for the Return of Fearless Lou and we gave him ‘zackly what he’d been lacking for the past 6 weeks.  Welcome Home, My Brother.

Dat’s It!

Peace Out, Yo!

5/7/2009 – A*T Chronicles: Bandshell Edition

Good Day to All Y’all,

The weather appeared it was going to be an issue for us this week.  In fact, the rumble of thunder and rain pelting down in buckets definitely gave me pause for a moment.  Then I got a call from the Lovely Chrissy (who was unable to join us because she was celebrating her father’s Birthday) who said “Ted LOVES those Bandshell Jams.  They always wind up being great.”  With that inspiration I set out from da’ Bronx for the friendly confines of Central Park.

I strolled passed by a very soggy Meadow on the Northern walkway and continued on to the Bandshell from the West.  There was a “fashion shoot” going on featuring a waaay too skinny blond in a garish YELLA jacket.  Thank goodness they were almost finished and called it a wrap before the Hard Corps of the Big Apple arrived.  I got myself nailed up and the first to join me was Quinn-O, followed a few minutes later by the reliable one himself, Roger Meier.  We chatted a bit and quickly got to the business at hand.

Our Jam* started out with instant flow.  In fact, we went dropless for the first 3-4 minutes of play with Quinn-O hitting a sweet south-paw Scarecrow and snapping off a Hi-Z angled Overhand to Roger off of the catch that he in turn converted into nice combo that he sealed with a double spinning Triple-Fake.  While this catch is practically a ‘The’ for him, it was really Hein in my view.  He also hit the first Gitis of the Day (Waka Waka Waka!).  We played for a while and then Mr. Doug E. Fresh sauntered in, setting up to change out of his cililian garb in the Bandshell itself where he was join by Bradford T.  Sir Tedley of Shredley arrived next and there was a very funny moment.

Brad and Fresh are busy changing, and TO was trying to be polite by not busting the ongoing Jam.  He’s self setting for a few minutes…he jumps up into the Bandshell and talks to the fellas, then jumps down…a few more self sets.  Then I glance over and he is just standing there like a big puppy waiting for someone to play with him.  Mind you, he did not whimper, but it was clear that he needed some Z’s right now, and we gladly obliged.  Adding TedShred to any Jam is always great.  He adds a level of joy to our mutual passion that is just great.

Brad and Fresh finally got up, and Roger went to ‘see how they do things over there’ after fixing a nail.  This left me, TedShred, and and the Mighty Quinn to soldier on.  This was great from my perspective because this made three (3) weeks in a row where this trio got to play together.  It is always interesting how people’s styles work together.  Quinn-O is left handed, so his backhand is Counter, while is forehand mac-throw and overhands come in Clock.  All of them strikes with Z’s.  TO is completely ambi-discerous in terms of throws, which is an sight to see because he is liable to throw anything from any direction with either hand.  SWEET!  All three of us like both spins so it really was a blast.

After a really good run, Roger, who had grabbed some H20, came back over, and TO switched to get him some Fresh and Brad.  This completed the circle of our first Jam and we continued without missing a beat.  And that is where your intrepid reporter must leave it.

Daddy Duty called, so I had to split at about 7pm, missing the last 45 minutes or so of Frisbee Frolic.  I was hangin’ with Carina, so I can’t complain.  I consider myself Blessed to be able to share time with My Girl and participate in another great A*T.

While Joey was absent yesterday, the Board designated Rob to wear the Yella Jersey next week.  Roger spoke with him and he said he was comin’ down.  Besides, he looks really good in Yella! 😉

Don’t forget, next week is Mikey Reid’s first A*T appearance, so if you are with striking distance of NYC, you should make your way out to the Sheep’s Meadow.

Peace Out, Yo!

4/30/2009 – A*T Chronicles: First Guest Jammer Edition

Hey, Hey, Hey…Wha’cha Got to Say?

First, I Got to say I miss my main man FEARLESS LOU!!!!!!  Can’t wait for your return, Homeboy!

So last week when I got to the Meadow I saw Richie Regs Z’ing up all alone by the Manhole off in the distance.  I had to do a phone interview for my Remaking America blog on The Loop http://theloop21.com/blogs/remaking-america so I planted myself by the gate to do it.  Technology is wonderful, baby!  I saw Robbie Rob ride in, and looked over my shoulder to see Jaime-TJH and knew it would be a good day.

I knocked out the interview and made my way over to homebase, where I found Mr. Bob Boulware, our first official Guest Jammer of the season.  I had not seen him since my July 2008 trip to Seattle, so I was stoked.  Rob had a little sand in there, and was making some noise so I nailed up right quick, told Jaime to pull out the Heavin’ Plastic, and we got Mr. Fried to stretch it out a bit.  Bob join in and the four of us got into the dynamics of flight without manipulation for a while.  That’s where we all started so it was great to see Rob snapping off back-hand strikes at distance.  Shortly thereafter, Bob and Rob when to get a Jam while Jestin Heaver arrived and three of the original Mighty Heavers went at it for a nice stretch.

During this time the rest of the crew arrived, which included Quinn-O, Susan, TedShred and the Lovely Chrissy, Doug E. Fresh, The Oracle, Roger (The proprietor of Chez Meier), and Jay The Mojito Man.  If I left anyone out, please forgive me as I left my notes in my Jam bag.

The first thing I need to point out is that Fresh Blood is wonderful, and Bob was really ‘on’ right from the start.  Everybody has unique elements to their game and what I found most amazing was his quickfastinahurry reaction time when committing to a given move.  Brushes with hands and feet that seemed to appear out of another dimension, combined with a flow-filled and generous game made for a welcome addition to the Hard Corps of the Big Apple.  He made his was through every Jam so we all got a taste of his (North) Left Coast stylings.  At one point the Lovely Chrissy saw him make a particularly Hein combo, and said “OOOOH, Bob’s Big Boulware is very impressive!” which I am sure makes the ladies happy.  😉

TedShred, Bob and I had a nice run, while Roger, Fresh, and Joey–who wore the Yella Jersey for the first time in 2009–went at it pretty hard.  Later Bob rotated out and Quinn-O joined me and TO.  This was great because the three of us had a smokin’ Jam last week and we picked up right where we left off.  There was much Shredful behavior everywhere and the last Jam included a 7-man, everybody in the pool gathering that was lots of fun.  We did not get a full O’Malley, but we did get 5-6 touches before sealing several times.  This is not easy to do without any stinkin’ conditions I would point out.

At dusk, we retired to Malachy’s where we watched the Yanks, the Triple OT Celts loss to the Bulls, and talked trash well into the night.  During that time Bob was convinced to take home some of Fearless Lou’s Finest Bone Nails.  We all got a laugh when we said they we faster than plastic for delaying, and he deadpanned “Who needs to delay?”  Ya gotta love that!

He also shared some sage advice with me regarding the types of things that I can work on personally to help improve my game that really resonated.  He said that I should be more aware of my body positioning in relation to the disc and anticipate where it is going to be in the flow is a combination.  That may sound like common sense, but the manner in which he communicated it was a revelation.  Or maybe it just sound better due to the Patron, but I am going to put this to use.  🙂

Oh yeah…I would like remind folks that Mikey Reid and Gary Auerbach are coming in next week, and there is a rumor that J-Will might be comin’ down too.  So where Bahston at?  Yer Sawx have been spankin’ the Yankers, but we still wanna see you here.  Also, G()d Willing, John “Z” Weyand will be coming in early June.  And finally–drum roll please…

The first All*Star Thursday Guest Jammer Initiative invitation has been extended to Dan Yarnell for the June 11th A*T.

It is a real honor for the Hard Corps of the Big Apple to have this talented Jammer, master craftsman of nails, and overall good guy make his first trip to NYC to hang with us.

That’s all for now…

Peace Out, Yo!

4/16/2009 – A*T Chronicles: Feelin’ fine in the ’09

Hail and well met to all my Plastic Peeps!

The day that the Hard Corp of the Big Apple has been waiting for finally arrived.  While we punched the clock through the winter by the Bandshell, and got in some smokin’ Jams at the Chateau Oberhaus on NFL Championship Sunday,  there is no place like home.

Before getting to the doings of the day, let me first say congrats to everyone who played at Paganello.  To PK, Randy, Arthur, Fresh and all the rest of the Crustilicious Critterz who made their way to Italia: Thanks for REPRESENTIN’!!!  To the folks who played, shredded and hosted on their home turf: Thank YOU for carrying the torch and advancing the sport we love so well.  And to Flo Hess: We hope you heal fast as there is a certain 2008 A*TGJI invitation that remains outstanding that we’d love to see fulfilled.  Sooooooo…

The weather here has been pretty chilly throughout the Spring, but Sheep’s Meadow opened up right on time.  I got a parking spot on my lucky block (69th Street) and walked in through the Northwest entrance.  As the first to arrive, I made my way to the Manhole, touched homebase, and started to nail up and stretch out.  Robbie-Rob was the next to arrive followed by his consort Susan, who has been working on her Frisbee skills all winter long.  Ben-Heaver and Jaime-TJH came along moments later so I was able to get my Heave on before Jammin’, which is ‘zackly how I like it.  I hadn’t thrown a 175 since November, and my first forehand made the ligaments in my right middle finger scream.  Just once.  From them on it was the joy of flight!

There was a fine turnout for the inaugural All*Star Thursday of the Obama era.  The Roginator, Richie-Regs, The Oracle, Mary-Mary, Doug E. Fresh, Ivan-TJH (aka my ‘Son’) and Bradford T. were all out, not to mention TedShred and the Lovely Chrissy who came bearing her traditional blend of Meadow Marghies.  We even had a rare Eddie Bennett sighting along with Mighty Mike Heaver.  To top things off, we had Jan and Greg, two filmmakers from Germany who are doing a documentary on Frisbee come out to shoot some footage and grab an interview or two.  Does it get any better than this?  Damn right it does!

Roger and Rob got in the the first Jam of the day, though Mr. Meier had a nail problem so I subbed in for him.  It was during this soiree that Mr. Fried had the honor of hitting the very first Gitis of the A*T season, off of a most Hein combo-set of course.  Now I gotta say that while it was a beautiful blue sky day, there was a chill in the air right from the start and the wind was squirrelly.  But as you well know…say it with me now…stay on key…CONDITIONS?  WE DON’T NEED NO STINKIN’ CONDITIONS!!!!

Next up for me was a chance to warm up Sir Tedley, but after a few throws, we were joined by The Oracle who had a look of mischief on his face right from the start.  Jan asked if he could shoot some footage, and we were off to the races.  There were nice flow right from the start with both Joey and TedShred hitting some nice stuff and me holding my own.  Jan went to shoot some other Jams and when he came back, this Jam went to 11.  I am pretty sure that the following was caught on video:  Teddy grabbed his left foot with his left hand and somehow did a crazy brush pass through the hoop with his right hand.  I saw it, just described it, and I STILL don’t understand how that happened.  Later, Joey did a guide under the leg to a brush with Ted tapped back to him for a Phlaud seal that didn’t make sense either.  For myself, I manage to do the Elevator Down to an under the leg pull which I set for Triple Fake seal.  I never did that before and I managed to nail it for the camera.  I was pleased to say the very least.

I stepped out to give The Oracle and Tedley some solo time, which they put to good use.  They had on co-op sequence that was not only indescribable, but was finished with Ted doing a quickfastinahurryandimpossible pass which Joey sealed with a gorgeous Gitis.  Not bad for a Half-Century man!  Not long after that, Greg the documentarian bailed on his Jam with Roger, Quinn, and Fresh to join TO and The Oracle.  They got hot and then Joey went to “see how they do it over there” joining the aforementioned amazing three.  That was the end of the day Jam which ended with a O’Malley Beer move starting with Roger’s set, to a  a Scarecrow brush by Joey, which Quinn-O then hooped, and Fresh sealed with a Gitis.  SWEEEEEEET!!!!  The Last Jammer standing was, as tradition would have it, TedShred of course.  We then retired to Malachy’s to share the ritual hops (or in my case Agave) based imbibment material.

We were so excited that we neglected to discuss the Yella Jersey, but I do know for certain that the Lovely Chrissy will be wearing it next week without fail.  She must atone for the sin of not having it on hand for the now legendary Chipper-Bro A*T Reunion Jam last fall.

That’s all for now…oh wait a minute.  There is one more item.  The Board will be extending the first invitation of the All*Star Thursday Guest Jammer Initiative for 2009 shortly.  We are hoping to get at least one (1) GJ’er per month from May through September.  We are doing our part…the question is…

When are YOU comin’ down????

Peace Out, Yo!

10/9/2008 – A*T Chronicles: Fall Summary Edition

A Strong What Up to All my Brethren and Sistren,

I’ve been quite for a while, mostly because I ran out of words after the
Legendary Chipper-Bro, Crazy John, Bill Wright, Buti, Larbs, PK, and EVERYBODY
Jam last month.

The past few A*T’s have been local affairs for the most part, with the Hard
Corps of the Big Apple coming out each week to do that Voodoo that we love so
well. There have been some hot combinations like when TedShred and Rob got
extended time, just the two of them, or Joey, Fresh, and Roger (who is stepping
up his game in a HUGE fashion lately) which had a no drop stretch that ranks
with the best of ’em.

As I walked in from the Northwest corner, I spotted Fresh jumping up
and sealing and very sweet Phlaud, and then throw to a vision in
orange e who immediately did a double-spinning barrel. Upon
closer examination, I recognized one Jonathan Willett, resplendent in an
tie-dyed Wright Life t-shirt who was in for his fall dosage of A*T merriment.
He is a frequent Guest Jammer and is a real blast to play with–more on that
later. We were also joined by Martina and Marco, two of our international
brethren who are visiting from Italy and had an added bonus of a rare appearance
by Bill Doobs. Our regular crew featured The Roginator, The Oracle, Fresh (with
Jill, BenJAMin, and Claire), Kevin, Ivan-TJH (aka My Son…and no he’s not
really my son), Ralph-Heaver, The Ageless Trevor Brown, Rob, Richie Regs, and
Mary-Mary. TedShred and the Lovely Chrissy were heading outta town so they were
absent. The latter has been holding on to the Yella Jersey for an extended
period, so the Board is working on the appropriate punitive measures to exact
for this transgression.

I started out with a nice Heaving session with Ivan-TJH and Ralphy Boy which was
excellent, as always. The winds were mild and the weather was beautiful with
temperatures around 73 degrees at jam time. I got loosened up and then stopped
when Mojito man Jay came through sine the Lovely Chrissy was not there bearing
our favorite Agave based nectar. Rob started the international Jam with Martina
and Marco, and was later joined by the Oracle, and then by Roger when Rob
rotated out. I got my first jam with Richie Regs and Bill Doobs, which was a
real treat becaue we’re all Counter guys. Later I got jam on with Willett and
Fresh when they got up again. We had some very nice Flow with Doug E. dealing
hot hands and J-Will hitting a variety of single and double spin moves. I was
able to hit a tea-bag combination and one heel kick combo that came up so sweet
that I almost missed the seal ’cause I was admiring my handiwork.

I couldn’t watch for long, but Robbie-Rob, Doobs, and Richie had a nice flow
going while my final Jam was with J-Will and Kevin. Our Boulder-ized Brother
hit the move of the day when he set up a vertical roll that started at the tip
of his foot, went up his leg, across his chest, all the way up his arm to a full
extension seal. OH, HOW HEIN!!!!

I will bestow Jam of the Day honors to all of the particiapnts as it was
essentially a perfect evening. Chrissy will be Yella for the foreseeable
future, and boy do we all miss Fearless Lou who is away doin’ his acting thing
up in MA somewhere. Until next week…

Peace Out, Yo!

8/28/2008 – Testimonial from Buti

(From Mark Regulbuti after the HUGE weekend of frisbee and fun)

A testimonial…

Where to begin? Here it goes… Last Thursday’s All Star Thursday was an almost indescribable confluence of disc friends, talent and history that stretched back to the beginning of freestyle carrying forward to the present. What a joyful mosaic and unabashed celebration of what disc has been for all of us–old friendships, new friends sharing something we have all been fortunate enough to have discovered in different ways by different means, and how it all brought us together for one great All*Star Thursday and weekend in NYC. Coming into Long Island Islip Airport, LI Rail to Penn station to subway 6th avenue and 4th emerging from the subway and there is the basketball court- NYC you know what I mean – 25 years later I knew where I was instantly having cut my Frisbee teeth in Washington Square. Then walking through there into a construction site that I had to detour around I found Ted O, Joe, Chip, Chrissy, Tall Paul and Craze (who looked like he just climbed out of the trunk of a limo) jamming nails on twilight fading. I was home again- gone too long and it was just getting started. Chinese food and rollicking times at Ted and Chrissy’s and Bill, Lou and Doug drop in then off into the village a falafel at Cafe Wha? a trip to a bar and Craze was getting a little warmed up with a mini disk shot off an empty drum set and a big butt- well you know how it goes.

Tripping around the Village and Soho the next morning it felt good to be back then up to Central Park for the main event- you have seen the photo and the names yeah it was more than Hein. Jamming with Brad? We go back to 79. With Quinn and Rob and Ted and Laerbs and Richie Regs and, and, and… And people just kept on showing up! Toddy and Alan from Boston, Paul and Cheryl from Florida…From Colorado, California, Boston, KC and Florida and Long Island, NJ and CT and all over NYC. We came and Jammed and were just, well, Frisbeeing! Sharing the joy of our sport, its history and our lives and “P.S.” as someone said “no entry fee or judging.”

Then there were some of the highlight jams Paul talked about. Then there was the great gathering at Tricia and Roger Meier’s afterword, which just a great natural progression from the park- thank you! And thank you Chrissy for calling me out of the blue and prompting me to travel to All*Star Thursday and thank you Jill and Doug for putting me and Bill up and thank you everyone for just being.

There were so many levels of the evolution and history of freestyle…from Krae who was there and created so much of what we do, and who inspired Joey, who inspired all of us by taking it as far as it has gone. To Roger and Rob and Bill Wright who qualified for the 79 Rose Bowl tourney Joe won; To Laerbs and me who qualified in 1980; to Ted O who was part of the next wave circa 1983, 1984; To Toddy and Paul K who were part of another wave in the mid to late 90’s but that is just the competition and we do not need no stinking competition no more with All Star Thursdays, The Jammers tournies, Virginia States and the like, the last two of which I need to be there next year.

NYC has the most vibrant jamming scene in the USA now- sorry Seattle but I think you would have to be second. I was just inspired by how many locals there are in NYC from newer players like Tall Paul, Fearless Lou, Trevor,* Chris to others I jammed with in Washington Square like Rob and Roger who put me up in lofts/apartments back in 1980 and 1981 and Brad and Quinn. And then there is Barack who just plays lights out and jams everyone into the ground doing some of the most rad stuff out there and easily one of the most athletic jammers out there now ala Schiller, Murphy, Lewis and Carrasco in no particular order.

So after the get together at Rogers a long night with my Santa Barbara friends Craze, Joe, Chip and Lou till 3 am or so then back at it again on Friday after seeing a Dali exhibit at the Modern art Museum (NYC is the greatest) where I had great jams with Doug, Rob and Richie 1st doing a heel brush to a spinning catch that I will never forget, or know how I did. And another great jam with Alan and then another heel brush to Tall Paul then off to Malachy’s for dinner… Then the subway ride with Craze and his trombone and him doing a Robin Leach impression on the subway that was, well, side splitting funny (you had to be there.)

Then the next day taking in NYC at a slow pace as the rain gave way to sun and a humid Sheep’s Meadow and more Hein jamming–woo what a sweat–then dinner with Paul and Cheryl then a cab to meet Chip, Craze, Joe and Lou in the village then simultaneously passing out- no not that young anymore! Then up to see the Met Art Museum Sunday a.m. to the park for more jamming videos of Old Rose Bowl 1980 and new Bandshell jams at Robs then out then on a plane then here not forgetting any of what was one of the greatest weekends I have ever had and the best of times with the best of friends and feeling how lucky I am to know all of you and to have disc and well to know- I am coming back- sooner than later! Out.

8/28/2008 – A*T Chronicles: Chipper (End of the) Summerfest

Hail and Well Met to all my Plastic Peeps,

When All*Star Thursdays began in 2004, it was just a chance for the crew to get together to play and have some laughs on a regular basis.*  It was so much fun that your intrepid reporter started blathering on about it to those in the JOTN list/serve. We had some
folks like the New Englanders and Gary Auerbach to join the fun and it was all good. Then Sir Schillz came in for a visit in May of 2006 for what became a legendary rain-soaked Jam and things really began to blossom. Last year saw the inaugural All*Star Thursday Guest Jammer Initiative where Bill Wright, Fabiosis, and Skippy Jammer all were flown in for the jaunt on out Green beach

This year has been amazing up to this point with folks like Pat Carrasco, Arthur ShredNow Coddington, and Alex the Muscovite among the many who graced us with their presence. We even had a day where some of the progenitors of our sport showed up together
for the first time in over 30 years. All of this was be so incredibly wonderful that we thought nothing could top it until now.

TedShred and I actually kicked off with a Washington Square Jam on Wednesday. We had just broken a sweat when the original Bud Light Team came walking up. That’s right, The Oracle arrived with Chipper-Bro Bell and Crazy John in tow. The former was our official A*TGJI invitee while the latter showed up as a complete surprise. In fact, when Chipper got to Joey’s house, he asked for help with his bags. When Joey got to the back of the limo, the driver popped the trunk and Ouila! There was Crazy John. Those guys joined ted and I in the Jam and just a few minutes later Mark RegalBUTI comes strolling through. We all shredded and then went to the House of Oberhaus for Marghies and Chinese. And now for the main course.

Just read through the Roll Call and understand that I know I missed a couple of names:
Chipper-Bro Bell, Crazy John, Mark RegalBUTI, Larry Imperiale, Bill Wright, Paul Kenny and Cheryl, Toddy Brodeur, Alan Caplin, Krae Van Sickle, Kevin Holt, Bill Doobs, The Oracle, Quinn-O, Chris Kohn, Doug E. Fresh, Jill, BenJAMin and Claire, TedShred and the Lovely Chrissy, Mark Dana, Jestin Heaver, Ben Heaver, Jaime TJH and Barb, Ben Heaver, Ivan TJH (my son), Rob and Sue, Bradford T, the Ageless Trevor Brown, Fearless Lou, Roger, and Richie Regs. And here’s proof:

I arrived late (6:35pm) after a day long meeting in Far Rockaway, driving an hour and 15 minutes through traffic and twitching every second. The crowd was huge and happy. It took me about 10 minutes just to say hello and take attendance. The Jamming had
already gone way passed 11 on the scale and I can only share a few highlights.

Chipper Bro is already a Legend of the game for many reasons, not the least of which is the Loving Spirit he shares so openly with anyone in his presence. He Jammed from
2:30pm until the very last Jam of the day featuring Sir Tedley and me. I also
got a smoking Jam in with Alan Caplin and Larry  Laerbs Imperiale who made a bid to be the first out of town Gamboa winner when he hit three consecutive scarecrow brushes with each as sweet and flat as could be. There were too many combinations to write down them all , so please forgive me.

Jam of the Day honors go out to the combination of Krae, Chipper-Bro, Joey, Fresh, and TedShred, but the evolution of the combination was incredible. Early in the evening, Krae
and Bill Wright got into a Flow which no one dared to bust. It was simplicity wrapped in
complexity, and encased in amazing. Later on Joey, then Fresh, and finally Chipper Bro came in and it was a sight to behold. You had Krae, Joey, and Bill serving as
Flow-meisters, Fresh filling in every gap, and TO as the featured soloist who just crushed everything in or out of his range. This one truly may just be the best combination I have ever seen, particularly since there was no tournament attached to the event.

Per Quinn-O: After Ted hit a double spinning, beautifully timed barrel, I saw Krae put his hand to the side of his face and shake his head slightly. The Ultimate compliment. After being wowed by the plethora of heinous guest players, I say here’s to the home-grown NY jammers.

Per Doug E. Fresh: At some point during the Jam, Krae came up to me and pointed
to TedShred and said something like:  “that fellow Ted seems to be a driving force
in all of this”

The party afterwards at Chez Meier was just as Hein as the Jams too. This was surely the greatest gathering of talent that the Hard Corps of the Big Apple has ever hosted.

So when are YOU Comin’ Down????

Peace Out, Yo!

8/14/2008 – A*T Chronicles: Synopsis and an invitation…

Hello to all,

This summer has flown by with life getting in the way of my reporting of the doings on our Green Beach. I was in California for consecutive A*T’s and came back last week to some international flavor. We had John Coxhead and Joe McCrave join us for a special All*Star Tuesday and Wednesday during their U.S. Tour. These young men are really good folks. They both have a passion, respect, and dedication for the game that is a true Blessing for all of us. The best part of their respective games is they both understand Flow and that sharing the disc means everyone can get loose during the Jam. They also did an interview with Rob and
The Roginator which detailed much of the early days of Freestyle and was a pleasure to witness as I didn’t know some of that stuff. I know it resides on their Blog, but I don’t know the link so I ask someone with that knowledge to please share. Oh yeah, on Tuesday, we had sun-shower roll through as we were playing. It rained pretty hard, but since it was pleasant, so we kept at it and were treated to a once in a lifetime sight. A DOUBLE RAINBOW with the inner one having both ends inside the Meadow!!!!!. It was beyond incredible and yes, I actually did run to check for the Pot ‘o Gold, just in case.

August 14th’s All*Star Thursday was yet another amazing example of the way the game has spread across the world. The weather was not promising when I arrived. In fact, as I parked my chariot on 69th Street (my lucky block) it began to pour with lightning and thunder to boot. I sat tight for about 20 minutes until it eased up and set off for the Bandshell since I was already Double Yella and was taking no chances. When I got there I found Rob, Richie Regs, and two gents I didn’t recognize. They turned out to be Guillermo from Italy, a newborn Jammer, and Alex from Moscow(??!!!) come in for the festivities. We were joined by Tedley, and the Lovely Chrissy, Barb-Heaver, Roger, Kevin, JB, a hobbled but extremely verbose Fearless Lou, and Joey.

The rain held out until the sun went down and the jams were plentiful and amazing. Guillermo has only been jamming for about two months and kept apologizing for errant throws or drops, but he stayed in there so he could get a taste and bring his hunger to learn. Alex was a different story. He essentially IS the Jam scene in Moscow, and let me tell you this kid is the Real Deal. A Lefty counter guy with great athleticism and disc-intuition beyond his years.

My personal favorite moment was during a Jam featuring TedShred, Roger, Richie, and I. The disc came to me from on high at a harsh angle so I had only one play–to go for a kick brush at the far reaches of my long legs and sized 14 feet. As I went for it I heard Joey’s voice in my in my head saying “wait”. I paused a beat and swung mightily but with just enough touch to send it about 15 feet in the air across to Alex who went up high for a Gitis off the pass. The following sequence saw the disc move around all four of us, but then it tried to go off on its own journey. Sir Tedley seized the moment by reigning in the errant disc with whacks, cuffs, and macs. During this flight on the wild side, he was closing in fast on a flock of tourists wandering aimlessly through and towards a real deep NYC style puddle with Alex as his wingman. As they headed into the crowd at full speed, TO sent the disc to Alex in an impossible situation–people milling about, water everywhere, and little room to manuever. So what does our young Padwan do? He danced lightly around the people and the water hazard, leaps into the air and comes down with his second consecutive Gitis seal. BRAVISSIMO!!!!!!

Jam of the Day Honors go to everyone of them because we collective proved once again that we don’t need no stinkin’ conditions. While I wore a yellow shirt and shorts–looking like a 6’5″ banana–the Yella Jersey was in the possession of Sir Rob of Fried who neglected to bring it in. He will be wearing today, and maybe through the season depending on the decision of Board. 😉

August 28th is going to be an All*Star Thursday to challenge the best of a great 2008 season. The A*T Guest Jammer Initiative welcomes Chipper-Bro Bell to the Big Apple! Not only that, we have 3 additional very special guests scheduled to join us–one from a state recently hit by Tropical Storm Fay, one from a mountainous region known for skiing and radical plastic, and one from California’s capitol. So The invitation goes out to all of our Plastic Peeps in the Northeast (and beyond) to come on down as we’re about to go to 11 (eleven) on this one. That’s plenty for now…

Peace Out, Yo!

TP, TJH

P.S. My condolences to the family and friends of Tom Gleason. I had heard his
name many times over the years and always attached to people smiling at the
thought of him.
